Emdebian Release Notes

[ Emdebian Grip 1.0 ] [ Emdebian Crush 1.0 ]

Emdebian Grip 1.0 (based on Debian 5.0 "lenny")

The status of the Emdebian distribution

  1. Early days -
    • Emdebian Grip 1.0 is very, very early and only contains a small number of packages. It exists principally to provide a set of stable packages to assist in wider development of the installer, packaging tools and test machines. Compare it with Debian 1.0 or Slackware 1.0, not a current release of a mature distribution.
    • The packages themselves come directly from Debian 5.0 "lenny", processed by scripts from the emdebian-grip-server package.
    • This release serves to provide evidence of what Emdebian has been doing and how Debian can be improved to make future Emdebian releases easier to create and maintain.
  2. Seven architectures - only arm, armel, mips, mipsel, i386, amd64 and powerpc are supported for Emdebian Grip 1.0. Other architectures might be added as support develops.
  3. Some kernels - Emdebian does not provide kernels for all supported architectures, stock Debian kernels exist for some architectures. The tools include support for packaging a bespoke kernel (and associated modules) alongside the root filesystem but the installation of the kernel and modules is not included in the tool support.
  4. No prebuilt images - each installation of Emdebian Grip is expected to start either with the Debian Installer or with debootstrap.

With these limitations in mind, Emdebian has used the template of the Debian installation guide to create the Emdebian Grip 1.0 Installation Guide. The Debian Release Notes could also be useful.

Emdebian Crush 1.0 (based on Debian 5.0 "lenny")

The status of the Emdebian distribution

  1. Early days -
    • Emdebian Crush 1.0 is very, very early and incomplete. It exists principally to provide a set of stable packages to assist in wider development of the installer, packaging tools and test machines. Compare it with Debian 1.0 or Slackware 1.0, not a current release of a mature distribution.
    • The packages themselves come directly from Debian 5.0 "lenny", cross-built for ARM.
    • This release serves to provide evidence of what Emdebian has been doing and how Debian can be improved to make future Emdebian releases easier to create and maintain.
  2. Single architecture - only ARM is supported for Emdebian Crush 1.0. Other architectures will be added as support develops.
  3. No kernels - Emdebian Crush does not provide any kernels, even stock Debian kernels (which are generally too big for devices running Emdebian Crush). The tools include support for packaging a bespoke kernel (and associated modules) alongside the root filesystem but the installation of the kernel and modules is not included in the tool support.
  4. No prebuilt images - each installation of Emdebian Crush is expected to be customised for a specific machine using machine:variant customisations. Root filesystems are expected to be generated using the emdebian-rootfs scripts.
  5. No installer - Emdebian Crush is not currently using the Debian Installer but it should be possible to use d-i in subsequent updates to handle the creation of the root password, users and monitor the process of running ./emsecondstage.

With these limitations in mind, Emdebian Crush has used the template of the Debian Installation Guide to create the Emdebian Crush 1.0 Installation Guide which includes an Errata section for known issues in Crush 1.0.
